1st Grade English Language Arts with Ms. Setili
Our "How to Make a S'more" writing piece is now in the hallway outside our room. Be sure to check it out!
This week, we will be reading a nonfiction text about movement. We will use this text to learn more about main idea/topic and three key details. This is a concept that we review over and over in everything we read in first grade. We will also learn what a common noun is. And, what proper nouns are. We will have a post-test on this concept on Friday along with our spelling test. Punctuation Post-Tests went home on Friday. We will obviously be reviewing the concept every day in our writing throughout the year. Please check out the spelling list page for new words. Keep working on pre-primer and primer sight words. I will be testing sight words one more time before conferences.

We will working on the short o vowel sound during word work this week. Please check the spelling word list. Some students will be working lists more tailored to their ability level this week as well. Last week, we learned about sequencing our stories that we read and write. We will continue this lesson by creating a writing piece about "How to Make a Smore" for the hallway to kick off our fall season! We will also be reviewing and learning more about the different kinds of sentences: commands, exclamations, and questions. We will have our post-test on this concept on Friday; as well as, our spelling test. This week, I will also be working with students one-on-one to determine their reading levels and how many words per minute that they can read (i.e. fluency). Last week, we did our pre-test for Pre-Primer Sight Words and for the concepts of capitalization, punctuation, and identifying the first word of a sentence. This is the paper that went home Friday that the students had to underline the first word, circle the capital letter and punctuation of each sentence. We will retest again for the post-test for grade cards at the end of the quarter once this concept is fully taught.
We have been working in our interactive notebooks on the skill: punctuation. This week, we will continue our work writing sentences: commands, questions, and exclamations. We will continue to review short i. It is common for the kids to confuse this sound with the letter e so we are working to help them fully understand short i by doing more work work in the classroom building CVC words in our notebooks. Our spelling list this week will be working on l-blends (bl, cl, sl). Please check the Spelling List page for more information. Spelling list sheets will go home Monday in the GO folder. I also gave students on Friday a new blue paper for the Primer Sight words list. Some still need to focus on the pre-primer list, so they did not receive a blue paper. Others have the sheet plus some additional words. Each student will continue at their own pace so I know which words to focus on for each individual. Our story of the week is "Flip." We will continue reading stories throughout the week the focus on L-blends. Our student teacher, Miss Dipprey has started working with the Blue Class and teaching lessons. We have been discussing characters and setting, and will be moving into story structure of beginning, middle, end (first, next, then, last). Be on the look out for a new story in the hallway outside our reading room. Happy Labor Day!
We will be working on the short i sound in our interactive notebooks (identifying, using, and building short i words). We will continue working on capitalization and punctuation when creating sentences. Our story for the week is called Go Pip! We will use this story to discuss main character, setting, and plot. We will be learning how to use a graphic organizer this week in order to write a personal narrative this quarter. Please check the Spelling page for our new words. Keep practicing the Pre-Primer Sight Words. We will do our oral pre-test for those words this week! |
